With not enough entries in Charleston, Mattek-Sands played and won her match

Following withdrawals in the qualifying draw of the Charleston tournament, it was filled by doubles players, including Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who had not played singles since December 2023.

The 40-year-old American faced her compatriot Sophie Chang, the No. 7 seed in the draw.

Mattek-Sands won 6-3, 6-1 in 1 hour and 5 minutes, against all odds.

She will face Shuai Zhang this Sunday for a spot in the main draw.
