"Women are not ready to play best-of-five sets," says Sabalenka
Aryna Sabalenka has made a perfect start to her Wimbledon tournament. The world No. 1 opened the schedule on Court 1 in the early afternoon and quickly took control to defeat Canadian player Carson Branstine (6-1, 7-5).
Speaking at a press conference after her victory, the Belarusian was asked about the difference in Grand Slam formats between men and women, and she insisted that it would not be a good idea for the WTA Tour to switch to best-of-five-set matches in Majors.
"It’s possible that playing best-of-five sets could benefit me because I’m one of the physically strongest players on the tour, but I don’t think I’m ready for it. It would be too much for the female body—women aren’t ready to play best-of-five sets, to play that much tennis. I also think injuries would increase significantly.
Still, it’s great to be able to train with men because it helps you learn things about how they hit the ball, how they handle certain situations during matches.
As soon as I train with a man, it adds value to my game, and I feel like I become a better tennis player," Sabalenka told Punto De Break in recent hours.
