Woodbridge praises Bencic: "One of the best players to have never won a Grand Slam"
Belinda Bencic has made a spectacular return to the circuit. After the birth of her daughter, the Swiss player quickly displayed an excellent level and is currently ranked 11th in the world. She won the WTA 500 tournaments in Abu Dhabi and Tokyo in 2025, also reaching the semifinals at Wimbledon and the quarterfinals at Indian Wells.
A swift return to the forefront for the player who won Olympic gold in singles and reached world No. 4. In contention for the WTA Comeback Player of the Year award, Bencic, 28, hopes to maintain the same momentum in 2026.
Former doubles great Todd Woodbridge is admiring of the performances of the Flawil native. He believes she is among the best players to have never managed to win a Grand Slam title.
"Bencic simply wanted to return and find the path to success"
"I agree that she should win the Comeback Player of the Year award. Vondrousova isn't far behind, but when I look at the trajectories of both players in recent years...
Vondrousova was indeed injured for a while, but I saw her lose interest in the sport for a time. She wasn't able to maintain the same level of intensity. After winning Wimbledon, it became more difficult for her.
As for Belinda (Bencic), she simply wanted to return and find the path to success after her pregnancy. That seems normal. Her story touches me, I hope she manages to win a Major. She is undoubtedly one of the best players to have never won a Grand Slam," Woodbridge stated on The Tennis Podcast recently.
