Andy Roddick: Serena Williams Still Has the Power to Win Singles Matches
Andy Roddick reignites the Serena Williams debate, saying she can win singles matches with her serve and power, citing signs from Berlin and Queen's.
In his podcast Served, Andy Roddick discussed the case of Serena Williams, who has returned to competition, for now only in doubles. According to the American, his compatriot would be capable of winning singles matches and believes in her return to that category.
'We Come Away Wanting to See Her Singles Matches'
In comments relayed by Punto de Break, he said: "We still don't know how she moves laterally, and I don't think that's something that will improve in four years, but I think she could win singles matches.
She'll hold her serve most of the time, and I think she'll break serve often. When you watch her play this match, you see her ball speed reach 190 km/h, you see her play brilliantly and sweep aside the number three seed.
We come away from the match saying: 'I want to see her singles matches.' I don't think she's training for doubles during her off days.
The atmosphere on center court is important, but what interests me is knowing how many practice matches she's played at Queen's and in Berlin during her off days. I want to know who she's playing practice matches against in Berlin. If she's actually playing them, that's a significant indicator."
