I don't think it's fair to say that," Gauff responds to Sabalenka's controversial remarks after Roland-Garros final
Aryna Sabalenka was unfiltered during her press conference following her defeat in the Roland-Garros final.
The world No. 1 stated that if Iga Swiatek had beaten her in the semifinals, Swiatek would have won the final against Coco Gauff. These comments didn’t sit well with the tournament champion, who responded as follows:
"I don’t agree with that. I’m the one sitting here (smile). The last time I played Iga, no offense to her, I won in straight sets. So I don’t think it’s fair to say that. Anything can happen. Given how Aryna has been playing these past few weeks, she was the favorite to win. She’s also the world No. 1, and I think she was the toughest opponent I could have faced.
Just based on statistics, I had the toughest match. Obviously, if Iga had won here, it would have been a tough match too. No matter who my opponent was, I would have had a chance. I stepped onto the court believing in myself. If you had asked me beforehand who I would have wanted to play, I would have said Iga, because Aryna was playing really well… But Iga is a formidable opponent. But things unfolded this way, and here I am.
