I don't want to end up hating tennis: Nick Kyrgios speaks emotionally about his future

At 30 years old, Nick Kyrgios is already looking toward the exit. The Australian, who hasn't played since spring, confides that he's preparing "for his final tournaments," with one ultimate goal in mind: saying goodbye to Melbourne.

Nick Kyrgios hasn't been seen on a tennis court since the Miami Masters 1000 in March and a second-round elimination. Bothered by a painful wrist and out of shape physically, the Australian has no illusions about his future on the tour.

This is what he admitted in the Unscripted podcast, discussing his physical condition and a possible retirement at the Australian Open:

"I'm training and playing practically every day. I'm just not competing. The schedule is almost over in terms of tournaments, but I'm preparing for some events.

I'm aware that I'm approaching the end of my career. I can't undergo another surgery that would keep me away from the courts for six to nine months.

You don't want to reach the point where you start hating your job or what you do. When you step onto the court and you can't train without pain or anything else, it leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. [...]

I will definitely play the Australian Open. I don't yet know exactly which tournaments I'll participate in, but I'll say my goodbyes to the Australian Open once more. I don't know if this will be my last season. It's difficult, because I know what it takes to reach that level and whether you can string those days together or not.
