A 10th Masters 1000 in 2028: ATP announces a major change in the calendar

Saudi Arabia will host a tenth tournament in the Masters 1000 category starting in 2028.
The ATP calendar is becoming increasingly packed, a point not missed by the main tour players. Currently, seven of the season's nine Masters 1000 events take place over twelve days, while the Monte-Carlo and Paris tournaments have kept the old one-week format.
A format that is not unanimously popular among the players. In recent hours, the ATP announced the creation of a 10th Masters 1000, which will be organized in Saudi Arabia starting in 2028, via a press release published on its website.
"As part of the very first expansion of this tournament category, Saudi Arabia will become the tenth host of the Masters 1000, joining the nine existing tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Toronto/Montreal, Cincinnati, Shanghai, and Paris.
This agreement marks a new era for global tennis and a major sports transformation in Saudi Arabia, attracting the biggest names in the sport to the country and offering an unforgettable experience for fans.
The tournament will also focus on accelerating the growth of the sport at all levels. A national grassroots program, developed in partnership with the Saudi Tennis Federation, will foster inclusion, accessibility, and talent development, inspiring the next generation of Saudi athletes and champions and creating solid pathways for participation.
This partly supports the broader ambition of developing the sport at all levels and contributing to the development of both men's and women's tennis," can be read on the ATP website.
"This is a moment of pride for us and the culmination of a journey that has taken years. Saudi Arabia has demonstrated a sincere commitment to tennis, not only at the professional level but also by developing the sport at all levels. We believe fans and players will be amazed by what awaits them.
The enhancement of our premium events is driving record growth and transformation across the entire tour, and we are grateful to our partners at PIF and SURJ for helping us to realize this growth and for sharing this vision," stated Andrea Gaudenzi, Chairman of the ATP, for his part.
