"I'm in the final and I'm going to enjoy it," says Davidovich Fokina, seeking his first career title in Basel
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, still searching for a first ATP title, took advantage of Ugo Humbert's withdrawal to reach the final of the ATP 500 in Basel.
Davidovich Fokina will play the fifth final of his career on the ATP tour, and the fourth in 2025 after those lost in Delray Beach, Acapulco and Washington. At the ATP 500 in Basel, the Spaniard benefited from Humbert's withdrawal, due to a back injury, to reach the final.
After the match, the world number 18 discussed the match against the Frenchman, whom he has now beaten for the third time in four encounters (and whom he is due to face in the first round in Paris at the beginning of next week).
"I am happy to be in the final, but I am sad for my opponent. Ugo (Humbert) deserved to keep playing. We played a great match. I am happy to be in another final, I can't believe it given how the week started.
I didn't like the balls, I didn't like anything. With each match, I played better and better, I am now in the final and I'm going to enjoy it," assured Davidovich Fokina, who then discussed his final opponent, João Fonseca.
"Fonseca is very young, he will be one of the best players in the world in the future. He has everything going for him, he masters every shot, mentally he is a beast. It's going to be complicated, seeing him today against Munar was incredible.
I want my revenge, I don't want to think about the final, only about my revenge against him (he had retired in the second round of Cincinnati this year). In a few years, it will be more complicated," he assured to AS.
