Joao Fonseca: "I was 130th in the world and now I dream of the trophy in Basel"
Joao Fonseca is having an impressive year for his young age. After making his Grand Slam debut and winning his first ATP 250, the player finds himself in an ATP 500 final for the first time.
This year, the Brazilian has surprised the tour. Ranked 150th in the world just a year ago, he now occupies 34th place in the world (live rankings), defying expectations and showing the extent of his talent. Thanks to his victory against Munar (7-6, 7-5), the Rio native qualified for the final of the ATP 500 in Basel.
"Having been 130th in the world rankings and now 40th... It's incredible. For this first season on the ATP tour, my team and I have taken it week by week. We didn't go to Asia this year because I was a bit sick.
This absence also allowed me to work a bit more on my mental abilities. As I told you yesterday, I am lucky to have these opportunities. So I'm just very happy to be here and I hope to get this trophy," he told the ATP microphone after the match.
Winner of the Buenos Aires tournament last February, the 19-year-old player has passed the first round of every Grand Slam he has played this season.
