New Roles for Cornet at the FFT: Former World No. 11 Becomes, Among Other Things, France's BJK Cup Captain
After announcing she was ending her career for good, Cornet will remain in the tennis world and will take on various roles for the French Tennis Federation.
This time, Alizé Cornet has definitively put away her rackets. The 35-year-old player, who had come out of retirement this year after first ending her career during last season's Roland-Garros, has turned the page and played her last official match in September at the San Sebastian tournament.
The Nice-native, who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 11, will now work for the FFT. Indeed, the latter announced that Cornet will now hold several roles.
She has been appointed manager of the French women's tennis teams and captain of the French Billie Jean King Cup team, replacing Julien Benneteau who left his position earlier in the season.
"After reviewing several applications, the FFT was convinced by Alizé Cornet's background as a former player, her commitment to French tennis, her profile, her motivation, and her availability.
Her experience at the highest level will be crucial to help the French Billie Jean King Cup team return to the world elite, to develop women's tennis from the junior categories to the highest level, and to contribute to the efforts for greater female representation within the Federation," can be read in the FFT's statement on its website.
Besides her role as France's BJK Cup captain, Cornet will also have the following responsibilities: the preparation and management of the Olympic team, monitoring French players in competition, contributing to cohesion and team spirit during gatherings and outside of them, as well as contributing to the implementation of an FFT plan for increasing female representation. She will report to Ivan Ljubicic, Director of High Performance for the French Tennis Federation.
"It is a tremendous honor to take on the responsibility for the French women's teams. I am aware of the trust the Federation is placing in me, and I am determined to do everything possible to help our players express their best level. I am committed to building a strong team spirit, based on high standards, solidarity, and passion for the blue jersey," Cornet reacted after taking up her new duties.
