5th semifinal in 2025 for De Minaur: Australian defeats Berrettini in Vienna
Alex De Minaur is the first player to qualify for the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Vienna.
The first quarterfinal match of the Vienna tournament pitted Alex De Minaur against Matteo Berrettini. The Italian led their head-to-head 3 wins to 1 before today's encounter.
After victories against Alexei Popyrin (7-6, 6-3) and Cameron Norrie (7-6, 6-7, 6-4), Berrettini was playing his first match of the day this Friday, and his start confirmed that he had not yet fully recovered physically from his match against the Brit.
Trailing 5-0 after 21 minutes, he ultimately conceded the first set very quickly, in less than half an hour of play. But the Italian hung in there. While De Minaur had a break advantage twice in the second set, Berrettini managed to fight back each time.
The Australian, world number 7, even served for the match at 5-4, but Berrettini broke back at the best possible moment. Finally, it was in a tie-break that the two men were separated.
More solid, and having played a match of good quality overall (20 winners including 4 aces, four breaks), De Minaur managed to dominate the tie-break (7 points to 4) to claim his second victory against Berrettini (6-1, 7-6 in 1h43) on the ATP Tour, three years after the last one at the ATP Cup.
After defeating the Austrian players Rodionov and Misolic, De Minaur dismisses Berrettini and reaches the semifinals where he will face Jannik Sinner or Alexander Bublik.
After Rotterdam (final), Monte-Carlo, Washington (title), and Beijing (semifinal), the Australian, with 40 hard-court wins in 2025 (a season record), reaches the final four of a tournament for the fifth time this year.
