733rd in the world, Tarvet advances to the second round of Wimbledon

After just a few hours of tournament play, Wimbledon may have already found the feel-good story of its 2025 edition. Ranked 733rd in the world this week on the ATP rankings, Oliver Tarvet has indeed qualified for the second round.

Facing another qualifier, Leandro Riedi, ranked 503rd in the world, in a matchup featuring two players ranked outside the top 500 for only the second time in 40 years at a Grand Slam, Tarvet delivered a polished performance to win in straight sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 17 minutes).
With 12 winners and 19 unforced errors, the player who is guaranteed to climb more than 200 spots in the rankings after the tournament secured his very first career win on the main tour—all without facing a single break point.
Now through to the second round, he could set up a marquee match against world No. 2 and two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard, now a seasoned competitor at these major tournaments, begins his campaign this Monday against Fabio Fognini and will aim for his 15th consecutive win on the London grass.
