Ben Shelton defeated Alex de Minaur to advance to the semifinals in Toronto. Speaking to the ATP, the American expressed satisfaction with the win: "I’m really happy with this victory; it showed great mental strength.
He’s broken me a million times in practice, and he’s a tough opponent. I served with confidence, and I’m really excited to be in the semifinals."
To secure the win, Shelton notably won the baseline battle against the Australian, which might come as a surprise.
He made sure to address this: "A lot of players see me as just a server and not really a baseline player.
Being able to win the longest rallies and feel comfortable in my own skin without rushing to make things happen is a big part of my growth.
