"A tennis legend doesn't deserve a farewell like this," Davidovich Fokina reflects on Nadal's last career match
For his last career competition, Nadal wanted to finish at home, in Spain, with his national team. Playing singles in the Davis Cup quarterfinals against the Netherlands, Nadal lost in two sets (6-4, 6-4) to Van Zandschulp. Spain then lost (1-2) to the Dutch team.
In an interview shared by Punto de Break, Davidovich Fokina, a teammate of the 22-time Grand Slam legend during this event, spoke about "Rafa's" finale:
"I found it very sad. I think they had planned a different departure, but since Spain lost in the first round, it was what it was. When I saw it, I said to myself, 'A tennis legend doesn't deserve a farewell like this.' And not just in tennis, but also off the court. For me, all the tournaments in the world should pay tribute to him. Roland-Garros is one of them. Nadal is the one who has won this Grand Slam the most times, so this tribute will undoubtedly be a beautiful moment."
Present at Roland-Garros, the 25-year-old player will face another Spaniard in the first round, Llamas Ruiz.
