Absent from the US Open, Wawrinka denied a wild card

In recent days, Stan Wawrinka (40 years old) played his first hard court tournament since February at the Cancun Challenger. The Swiss champion reached the semi-finals before being defeated by Thiago Agustin Tirante, the world number 117 (6-3, 6-3).
The former world number 3 at his peak, now dropped out of the top 140 and who ended a streak of twelve consecutive clay court tournaments last week, is not preparing for the US Open, as the three-time Grand Slam champion will not be present in New York this year.
Already absent from Wimbledon, Wawrinka, winner of the US Open in 2016 after his victory against Novak Djokovic at the time, had requested a wild card to participate in the American Grand Slam, but his request was rejected by the tournament organizers.
It was his coach, Magnus Norman, who announced it on his social media in recent hours: "Stan was hoping for a wild card at the US Open, but we will return home and improve," he wrote on Instagram.
Thus, Wawrinka will not play either the qualifiers or the main draw at Flushing Meadows, and will miss a second consecutive Grand Slam for the first time since 2021-2022, when he missed four consecutive Majors between Roland-Garros 2021 and the Australian Open 2022.
The Swiss player's last Grand Slam victory dates back to the first round of Wimbledon 2024 with a three-set win against Charles Broom before a loss to Gaël Monfils in the following match.
