After a crazy scenario, Learner Tien wins his first ATP title!
At just 19 years old, American Learner Tien pulled off one of the craziest scenarios of the year on the ATP tour. Trailing 1-5 in the third-set tie-break, he ultimately defeated Cameron Norrie (6-3, 3-6, 7-6[6]) to claim his very first title on the tour.
This Saturday in Metz, Learner Tien made a big statement. At 19, he joins Novak Djokovic (who won in Metz in 2006 also at 19) among the tournament's youngest champions.
But beyond the numbers, it was the manner that electrified the crowd: after leading 3-0 in the third set, Tien saw Norrie come back, then lead 5-1 in the tie-break. But carried by impressive resilience, he turned the situation around to win 8-6.
We had already glimpsed his talent this season, and this victory is proof once again. Capable of raising his level in the hottest moments, he showed a more than promising mental strength.
Finally, you have to go back to 2002 to find a very young American winning a title on the ATP tour: Andy Roddick. And one thing is for sure, Tien doesn't plan to stop there: starting Monday, he will enter the world Top 30, at 28th place, a spectacular leap for a player who was still competing in college tournaments not long ago.
