Alcaraz: "I felt I'd let the Spaniards down".
Carlos Alcaraz lost in the final of the Olympic Games, and he's finding it hard to accept.
Beaten by a gala Djokovic (7-6, 7-6), the Spaniard didn't play badly, but was simply a little less effective on the important points.
Even if he can leave Paris with his head held high, as he takes home the silver medal and a lost final in which he still played some brilliant tennis, Alcaraz is still feeling the pinch.
As he sees it, the defeat was particularly difficult because he was not only playing for himself, but also representing his country.
Still very emotional, he told a press conference: "I was moved (to tears) because, in a way, I felt I had let the Spaniards down.
Bringing an Olympic gold medal back to Spain is something I've wanted to do since I started playing tennis.
I wouldn't say I was under more pressure, but it was a different kind of pressure. The whole of Spain was waiting for me to win the Olympic title.
I put pressure on myself to do that. I've played in four Grand Slam finals where I've had difficult moments that I've been able to overcome.
Today was different from when I play for myself. If I compare it to other tournaments, I didn't manage to bring out my best level, whereas Novak managed to do it."
Jeux Olympiques
"Another epic final, @carlosalcaraz. El clasico," Djokovic wrote. "Congratulations to you and your team for an excellent Olympics. Considering your age, your energy and the way you play, you probably have 20 more Olympics ahead of you. Your gold will come. Until next time, amigo."
you will have to try again for the 🥇 and you can definitely win it
