Alexandrova topples Pegula and reaches the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Doha

It's off to the quarter-finals of the Doha tournament. The first match pits Ekaterina Alexandrova against Jessica Pegula on center court.

The Russian, fresh from her triumph in Linz, is in confident mood and has already dominated Emma Raducanu, world number 1 Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens on her way.

For her part, Pegula eliminated Elina Svitolina and Daria Kasatkina. The first set failed to live up to expectations, with both players committing a large number of unforced errors. But the American was ahead from start to finish, and finally wrapped up the set.

But, as in the same encounter in Miami last year, Alexandrova, trailing Pegula by a set to nil, managed to turn the tide, proving more successful in taking the initiative. The 26th-ranked player in the world soon broke away.

Pegula wanted to get off to a strong start in the third set, winning her first game, but Alexandrova was the best player on court, and she finally broke Pegula, who was soon out of options.

After 1h42 of play, the Russian added a new headliner to her trophy cabinet (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) and reached the semi-finals in Doha.

For a place in the biggest final of her career, she will face the winner of the match between Marta Kostyuk and Amanda Anisimova later in the day.

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
