"All the signs he shows make me understand he's already mature," Agassi praises Fonseca
The new captain of Team World for the Laver Cup, André Agassi, will take on his new role in San Francisco in mid-September for the 2025 edition of this team competition. In recent days, the fourth player representing Team World has been revealed.
After Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Tommy Paul, it’s the young Brazilian sensation João Fonseca (18 years old) who has been announced as a participant in the Laver Cup in the coming months.
Before becoming his captain for the weekend, the former world No. 1 and eight-time Grand Slam champion spoke about Fonseca’s rapid rise. Currently ranked 65th in the world, Fonseca won the Buenos Aires tournament in February and the Next Gen ATP Finals last December as part of his preparation for the current season.
"He caught my attention eight months ago. I watched him play. It’s crazy. He generates so much power on both his forehand and backhand, and it looks effortless. The movement, the physicality… He’s taller than you’d think, a bit like Sinner.
It’s pretty insane when you watch him. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t need to wait to know what I’m seeing. I believe in his future. I hope he’s equipped to handle the weight on his shoulders, the pressure that comes with these expectations.
But I have to say, all the signs he shows make me understand that he’s a true professional and already mature—he seems older than his age. I believe in him, and I want him to know that now. I want to be there in person to watch him play against anyone," Agassi told *Tennis Up To Date*.
