"An incredible atmosphere to enjoy," says Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation
Italy has stood out for several years as the top nation in team competitions. Recent weeks have been marked by Jannik Sinner's triumph at the ATP Finals in Turin, the men's team's success in the Davis Cup for the third year in a row, and the women's victory in the BJK Cup for the second consecutive time. Angelo Binaghi, president of the Italian Tennis Federation, discussed his country's success and does not hide his ambitions for the coming months.
"These were two magnificent weeks, first the ATP Finals dominated by Sinner in Turin, then the Davis Cup won in Bologna. And the tennis authorities don't let us organize anything else, otherwise we wouldn't have stopped there. The truth is, whatever we do in tennis, in Italy, we always win.
We can afford to exclude a top 30 player like Darderi, players like Arnaldi, and still win. This means we have a system that works. The Davis Cup is a competition, with the current format, that has often been won with just one player. We could play with 8 to 10 players.
In men's tennis, we are the strongest nation in the world. I wouldn't speak of a goal, but of goals in the plural. After Jasmine Paolini's triumph last May in Rome, we must win the men's tournament, which hasn't happened in 50 years, and organize another big celebration like that one.
Sinner must then become number 1 again, Musetti must enter the top 4-5. Errani must play her whole life. And we still expect a lot from Jasmine. There is an incredible atmosphere to enjoy," Binaghi assured La Gazzetta Dello Sport in recent hours.
