Andreeva, in the top 10 at 18: "I try not to pay attention to the rankings"
Mirra Andreeva just turned 18. The young Russian player, who won her first two WTA 1000 titles earlier this season in Dubai and then Indian Wells, is already in the top 10 and ranks 7th this week as she prepares to compete in the WTA 1000 in Rome.
Before facing Emiliana Arango or Viktoriya Tomova in the second round, Andreeva attended a press conference and was asked about not checking her rankings week after week.
"I’d say I try not to pay attention to the rankings. I think I’m still in the top 10, but I try not to focus too much on that and not to track how things change from week to week.
I checked my ranking a week ago, and I was still in the top 10. I just try to do my job and do it as effectively as possible. I won some titles very early, but even though I want to win more, that doesn’t mean they’ll just come to me.
It’s up to me to work hard. I try to do everything to achieve that. Sometimes things go my way, and sometimes they don’t. I won’t put pressure on myself if I don’t win big tournaments this year.
I have time ahead of me. I know that if I work hard, those titles will come eventually. It might take one, five, or even ten years. You can’t predict what will happen, but I also want to enjoy the tour. I’ll see how everything unfolds," Andreeva explained.
