Andreeva topples Swiatek and reaches the last four in Dubai

The first quarter-final of the day at the WTA 1000 tournament in Dubai was a mouth-watering affair. It pitted Iga Swiatek, world number 2, against Mirra Andreeva, world number 14.

The 17-year-old Russian didn't lose a set on her way to the quarters, successively eliminating Elina Avanesyan (6-2, 6-1), Marketa Vondrousova (7-5, 6-0) and Peyton Stearns (6-1, 6-1).

For her part, the Pole is looking to reassure herself after her semi-final defeat by Ostapenko in Doha. This is the second meeting between Swiatek and Andreeva, following the Polish player's quarter-final victory in Cincinnati last year (4-6, 6-3, 7-5).

On cloud nine since the start of the week, the Russian got off to the best possible start. Solid on her serve, she broke Swiatek twice, which was enough for her to take the first set without any real problems.

The second, however, got off to a different start, with Swiatek finally managing to break Andreeva's serve at 1-1.

But the advantage was short-lived, and Andreeva, trailing 1-3, eventually took the lead for good, winning the last five games of the match.

In the end, Mirra Andreeva prevailed (6-3, 6-3 in 1h37) and qualified for her first ever WTA 1000 semi-final. She will face either Elena Rybakina or Sofia Kenin for a place in the biggest final of her career to date.

Following the elimination of Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff, it's now Iga Swiatek's turn to leave Dubai.

This further opens up the field as we await the rest of the day's action. In addition to Rybakina-Kenin, the last two quarters will pit Tauson against Noskova and Cirstea against Muchova.

Omnipresent cameras, line judges on the verge of extinction, mistakes that persist nonetheless: technology fascinates as much as it divides. Tennis, at a crossroads, is still searching for its balance between progress and emotion.

Training future champions: spotlight on the decline of the French public model facing private academies

As federations struggle to reinvent themselves, private academies are capturing talent… but also families able to invest tens of thousands of euros a year. A system that is increasingly effective, but also increasingly unequal.

The impact of the war on tennis in Ukraine: financial aid, foundations, governing bodies and all‑round headaches

Since February 2022 and the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Ukrainian sport has been heavily affected by human, structural and economic losses. Tennis has, of course, not been spared. While Ukrainian athletes have had to rethink their entire organization, an entire country, behind the scenes, has had to adapt and change its training conditions. This extends all the way to the highest level, where professional players have spoken out, trying as best they can to help their nation.

As we move to the end of this month and also closing out the year I am wishing all of those following me a Merry Christmas and a Happy/Healthy New Year.

Let's make that wish for all 2000 plus players hoping for 5 wins each day. Hoping ŵhen we open the results page to see all green, and no red. And especially NO CANCELED matches.

From me and my rotti JAZ, I bid you all good night, and see you in...

why did tennis tonic void predictions on the match between Chwalinska and Huergo at the Quito tournament? The match was played to completion and on time. If TT feels the match is one sided, and of course it was, then don't put it up for prediction. This is getting irritating.

The finals are here, and we scramble for the best finish. I've been chasing "King" all year and I was able to shrink the spread a little. Skelp is also closing the gap.

Seasons best to all the regulars in our league.

Will you all be back in the new year.?

Steffi Graf completed a Golden Slam (not just a career Grand Slam) when she was 19. She is the only person to accomplish that, winning the four majors plus Olympic gold the same calendar year.
