Andreeva, winner of her first WTA 1000 at the age of 17: "I had set myself a Top 10 target at the end of the year".
Mirra Andreeva made WTA history in Dubai on Saturday, becoming the youngest player to win a WTA 1000 tournament since the format was introduced in 2009.
Smiling after her triumph, she talked about her final and her entry into the Top 10 (ranked 9th in the world) in a post-match interview:
"Honestly, it's incredible. I had set myself the goal of reaching the Top 10 by the end of the year, but it's now February and I've done it.
I'm very happy with the way I played today, even though I was very nervous. I think you could see that during the match, with the double faults and mistakes I made.
So I'm very happy that I was able to handle the pressure. I was trying not to think about the title. I said to myself 'One point at a time, do what you do best and don't think about anything else'.
All these thoughts came to mind and it was difficult. It's something I've always dreamed of and the dream has come true. I don't have the words."
