“At first, I was waiting for Novak,” Mahut wanted to play his last tournament with Djokovic
Nicolas Mahut played the final match of his career this Tuesday evening alongside Grigor Dimitrov.
At 43 years old, Mahut has taken his final bow. The Frenchman played the last match of his career in doubles at the Paris tournament. On Court 2, the pair Dimitrov/Mahut lost in the super tie-break to Hugo Nys and Édouard Roger-Vasselin.
After the match, the Angers native revealed the behind-the-scenes story of his final tournament, which he had hoped to play with Novak Djokovic. But in the end, he has no regrets about the choice of Grigor Dimitrov, who returned from injury this week after several months of absence.
“At first, I was waiting for Novak (Djokovic). He told me at Roland-Garros: 'If I come to Paris, I promise we'll play together.' In the end, he didn't come, it was a bit difficult.
Thanks to Richard (Gasquet), I asked Grigor (Dimitrov), and of course it was fantastic. He was extraordinary, I have a lot of admiration for the player. He didn't hesitate, he told me: 'Listen, it's your last tournament, I'm happy to do it with you,'” Mahut stated on court for Eurosport.
