At Wimbledon, Gasquet gets off to a good start, and so does Gaston!

At Wimbledon, Gasquet gets off to a good start, and so does Gaston!

For the moment, the French contingent is doing well on British soil. In addition to the qualification of Mpetshi Perricard, top seed No. 1 in the draw, many other Tricolores have qualified for the second round.

These included Hugo Gaston and Richard Gasquet. Faced with rather affordable opponents, they both did the essential, winning without dropping a set.

Number 2 seed in the draw, Hugo Gaston, although known for his lack of ease on grass, managed to make the task not too difficult for himself, securing his first victory of the season on the surface. Against Mochizuki, he didn't shine, but was solid enough on serve to come through (7-6, 6-4).

Having won his first title on clay in Lyon just under 10 days ago, the man from Toulouse will need to tame the surface more effectively if he is to reach the main draw.

For his part, Richard Gasquet also made a successful debut. At the age of 38, the Biterrois, who is more adept at playing on grass, confirmed his fighting spirit. Although a long way from his best, particularly physically, Gasquet never loses heart, and it was in love with his sport that he made it through the first round. Facing local player Crawford, 'Richie' mastered the proceedings overall to win after just over 1h30 (6-2, 7-6).

Both are now within two wins of qualifying for the final table.
