Athens: Musetti joins Djokovic in the final, the last Masters spot will be decided tomorrow
Lorenzo Musetti has no more room for error: after surviving Korda in a thrilling match, the Italian must beat Djokovic to reach Turin. But fate may have another, even more improbable, surprise in store for him.
Since the beginning of the week, Lorenzo Musetti knew the pressure was on his shoulders. After Félix Auger-Aliassime's withdrawal in Metz, the Italian absolutely had to win the title in Athens to secure the final ticket to the Turin Masters.
A difficult mission, but not impossible. Musetti had a tough start to his tournament against Stan Wawrinka (victory in the third set 6-4), before cruising through the quarterfinals against Alexandre Müller (6-2, 6-4).
In the semifinal against Sebastian Korda this Friday, the world number 9 played a perfect first set, winning 6-0, before seeing his opponent gradually wake up.
Faced with Korda's solid and offensive game, Musetti grew increasingly frustrated but ultimately clinched a narrow victory 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 in 2 hours and 20 minutes. This win keeps his hopes alive for Masters qualification, with a final to play tomorrow against Novak Djokovic.
A rather unique scenario could therefore unfold: if Djokovic wins, he would deny Musetti the final ticket to Turin... But a potential withdrawal by the Serb after Athens would paradoxically grant him that very same spot.
