Atmane Eliminates Rune and Continues His Incredible Run in Cincinnati
Térence Atmane faced Holger Rune in the night session this Thursday in Cincinnati. Coming through the qualifiers, the Frenchman was riding high after a strong victory over Taylor Fritz.
The match started well for him against the Dane, breaking his opponent as early as his second return game. He wasn’t troubled much on his own service games afterward and even managed to break again to take the first set 6-2.
The second set began less favorably for Atmane, who was broken right away by his opponent, but he quickly recovered the deficit and broke back in the ninth game.
On his own serve, the third match point was the charm as he closed out the match.
Atmane wins 6-2, 6-3 and, with this victory, becomes the first Frenchman born in the 21st century to reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event.
He will face Jannik Sinner in the next round.
