Bergs overjoyed after Belgium's victory against France: "We are evolving as a team and becoming better players every year"
Belgium is the first nation qualified for the semifinals of the 2025 Davis Cup. After Raphaël Collignon's victory over Corentin Moutet, it was Zizou Bergs who sealed the outcome of the match against France with a straight-sets win over Arthur Rinderknech (6-3, 7-6).
For the first time in eight years, the Belgians will compete in the final four, and this marks Belgium's first victory over France in the competition since 1997. Bergs reacted to his victory on the court just minutes after enabling his team to reach the semifinals.
"It's a strange emotion, I don't really know what happened, I barely remember a few points. When I watch the match again, I will surely be very proud of what I did, but also of Raphaël (Collignon) in the previous match. His victory gave me extra motivation and peace of mind to go on the court and enjoy myself.
Playing for your country is something I can't describe. The feelings before the start of the competition are different. Today, before the match, there was more stress than usual, but on the other hand, the more stress there is, the more it shows that I want to be here and the more effective I will be on the court. We have an incredible team, everyone who is part of the team as well as the fans have given me a lot of love, that's why it worked out rather well.
Raphaël's victory helped me a lot. If he wins, there is a huge opportunity for me. We don't tell ourselves: 'Okay, if I don't win this match, we are eliminated.' Because if I hadn't won, we would have had another chance in the doubles. It's a different mentality, but it shows that we are evolving as a team and becoming better tennis players every year, I hope we will continue like this," Bergs stated to the Davis Cup media.
