Berrettini before facing Gaston in Miami: "He's a very talented player who moves very well"
Matteo Berrettini is back in the top 30. After suffering several injuries in recent years, the Italian seems to be gradually regaining his form. In recent weeks, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist defeated Novak Djokovic for the first time in five encounters at the Doha tournament.
After a loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas, Berrettini will begin his Miami tournament against French lucky loser Hugo Gaston, who advanced after Yoshihito Nishioka retired. Speaking to Sky Sports Italia, the former world No. 6 shared his ambitions for the tournament and discussed his upcoming opponent in Florida.
"Historically, Miami has never been a tournament where I've performed well, but I hope to change that this year. It's a long journey from California to here, the conditions change a lot, and the event is historic because in America, there's a special atmosphere for tennis.
The city brings a lot of energy, you can feel the warmth of the people: there are many Italians, Europeans, and South Americans. I played my first match against Hugo (Gaston) during my comeback a year ago in Phoenix, and then we faced each other in the final of Kitzbühel on clay.
He's a very talented player, left-handed, who moves very well and is capable of delivering a high level of tennis. It will be a complicated match, especially because in Miami, he has already played two qualifying matches and the first round.
He has already adapted well to the conditions. When you play against an opponent who is already in rhythm, it's always challenging. I'm playing very good tennis, I feel good. It will be a tough match, we'll prepare well with my team, and I'll give my best," he assured in recent hours.
