Goffin before facing Alcaraz: "This is why I continue to play tennis"
This Friday, David Goffin, who qualified for the second round of the Miami Masters 1000, will challenge the world number 3, Carlos Alcaraz, and will attempt to deliver one of the best performances of his career.
After his victory against Aleksandar Vukic (2-6, 6-4, 6-2), the 34-year-old Belgian, ranked 55th in the world, appeared before the ATP media to discuss his upcoming match against the Spaniard, who triumphed in Florida in 2022.
"This is why I continue to play tennis, just to see where I stand compared to the best players in the world. I have a chance to play Carlos Alcaraz once again (1-1 in head-to-head matches), to see where I am at the moment.
He is probably playing the best tennis of his career. He is still young, but he is an incredible player. So, we'll see what happens, but I'm happy to still be able to play on a big stage. It's going to be a very exciting match, and we'll see what I can do.
I feel good. Midway through last season, I made some changes to my team and started playing better, winning some good matches, and then regained my confidence.
So, I finished the year very well, I was very close to the top 50 at the end of the year. I wanted to finish my career knowing that I gave it my all, the feeling that I did everything I could to finish as well as possible, and that's what I want to do.
I'm 35 this year. I don't know how many years I have left to play, but I will try to play for a few more years if I continue like this. I feel good. I like the way I'm playing, I feel better," said Goffin, a finalist at the ATP Finals in 2017.
