Berrettini on Fognini: "All of Italian sports will remember his achievements"
In recent hours, Fabio Fognini announced that this 2025 edition of the Rome Masters 1000 would be his last. At 37 years old, the former world No. 9 will compete in the Roman tournament for the 18th and final time in his career, facing Jacob Fearnley this Thursday.
If he wins against the British player, the 2019 Monte-Carlo champion would face his compatriot Matteo Berrettini in the second round. Ahead of this potential all-Italian derby, Berrettini himself reacted to Fognini's announcement.
"I’m sure the crowd will make themselves heard. There could be a 100% Italian clash against Fabio (Fognini). Historically, I’ve played some very good matches in Rome—this kind of atmosphere can help bring out something extra in my game.
Fabio has been the flagbearer of Italian tennis for many years, especially in the Davis Cup. When I was a kid, I watched his exploits. We have completely different personalities, but I studied him as a player.
If he’s made this decision, it’s because he feels the time is right for him to stop, and I can only wish him the best for what comes next. It won’t be easy, but I wish him good luck. All of Italian sports will remember his achievements," he told Tennis World Italia.
