Bertolucci analyzes the race for the world No. 1 spot: "Sinner's return will silence everyone"
The former world No. 12, Bertolucci, weighed in on the competition for the top rankings. While Zverev recently claimed he is among the contenders, the Italian disagrees:
"Zverev? He's had 6 or 7 tournaments so far, and he really picked up the scraps. I was stunned by his statement where he said: 'There are four of us—me, Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic—who can easily become No. 1 overnight.'
That seems very strange to me, considering the points gap between him and Sinner. It’s hard to speculate, but anything is possible. He’d have to win Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, and then Madrid," he told Sky Sport.
The 73-year-old expressed confidence that Sinner will solidify his No. 1 spot upon his return:
"I still believe that since Sinner will be in Rome as No. 1 without having to defend points, while Zverev will have 1,000 points to defend—from that point on, I see almost no chance for him.
We’re all still waiting, even though Sinner’s return is a month away, which, in my opinion, will silence everyone."
