BJK Cup 2025: The United States Wins the Decisive Doubles Against Kazakhstan and Reaches the Semifinals

After a thrilling encounter in Shenzhen, the United States qualifies for the semifinals of the Billie Jean King Cup, thanks to Emma Navarro’s heroic performance and a solid doubles match by Pegula and Townsend against Kazakhstan.
The suspense was palpable in Shenzhen during this third quarterfinal of the Billie Jean King Cup between Kazakhstan and the United States. The USA had taken the lead thanks to Emma Navarro, who saved two match points against Yulia Putintseva (7-5, 2-6, 7-6), before Elena Rybakina allowed Kazakhstan to equalize with a convincing performance against Jessica Pegula (6-4, 6-1).
Thus, it was the decisive doubles that would separate the two countries. The Putintseva/Rybakina pair was chosen for the Asian country, while Lindsay Davenport’s team presented Pegula and Townsend.
In a well-controlled match overall despite a break to overcome in the second set, the Americans were more solid (6-2, 7-6) and claimed victory 2 matches to 1 against Kazakhstan.
The United States thus qualifies for the semifinals for the first time since 2021, joining Italy and Ukraine, who qualified in recent days. Winners of the BJK Cup 18 times, the USA will face the winner of the last quarterfinal, which takes place subsequently between Japan and Great Britain.
