Bonzi passes first round in Brisbane, Rinderknech eliminated
The main draw begins at the ATP 250 Brisbane tournament. Before Novak Djokovic's eagerly-awaited entry into the tournament with his new coach Andy Murray, the first round kicked off on Monday.
Two French players took to the courts in a bid to reach the last 16.
In a hotly contested match, Benjamin Bonzi, ranked 75th in the world and a qualifier, toppled Chilean left-hander Alejandro Tabilo after almost three hours (6-7, 7-6, 6-4).
The 28-year-old will face another top Chilean server, Nicolas Jarry, who defeated Mariano Navone (7-5, 7-6).
On the other hand, it's all over for Arthur Rinderknech. Ranked 59th on the ATP rankings, he was dominated in two sets by Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka (6-3, 6-4).
The latter will face the winner of the clash between Holger Rune and Jiri Lehecka for a place in the quarter-finals.
