Bonzi Pulls Off Surprise by Eliminating Medvedev at Wimbledon
Bonzi delivered a top-tier performance by defeating world No. 9 Medvedev in four sets (7-6, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2) in the first round of Wimbledon.
The Frenchman proved efficient on break points (3/4) and won slightly more points than his opponent after his first serve (78% vs. 76%). With eight love games, the ATP’s 64th-ranked player also capitalized on the Russian’s 47 unforced errors. Thanks to this performance, he secured his third career grass-court victory, having previously exited in the first round in Mallorca (losing to Holt 2-6, 6-4, 6-4).
A semifinalist in the last two editions, Medvedev thus left the English capital in the opening round, venting his frustration with a racket throw at the match’s end. The Russian continues his poor Grand Slam run this season, having been eliminated in the second round in Australia and in his first match at Roland Garros.
In the next round, Bonzi will face the winner of the match between Thompson and Kopriva.
