Brad Gilbert: "If Sinner Returns to His Level, There Will Be Far Fewer Surprises on the Tour"
Brad Gilbert, former coach of Andre Agassi, Andy Roddick, and Andy Murray, shared his thoughts on Italian tennis and Jannik Sinner.
For him, if Sinner returns to his best level, surprises like Jakub Mensik’s title in Miami will become much rarer.
"In the current rankings, Italy has many players in the Top 100, with several around the same age as Sinner—and that’s no coincidence.
Your country has built a system that not only supports players but also does the same for coaches, trainers, and physiotherapists.
Sinner is the ultimate reward, but there’s much more to Italian tennis. He dominated up until the Australian Open; over the past year and a half, he hardly ever lost before the semifinals.
In my opinion, he shouldn’t have missed a single tournament. Rome will help him arrive in top form for Paris.
I say this because no matter how much you train, you can’t replicate match intensity. You have to play matches.
Over these past three months, Draper and Mensik have made breakthroughs, while Alcaraz has struggled a bit physically. Now, much depends on Sinner’s comeback: if he returns to the level he left off at, there will be far fewer surprises."
