Calm Gauff Overcomes Frech to Reach US Open Round of 16

World No. 3 Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, has secured her spot in the round of 16 after defeating Magdalena Frech (6-3, 6-1).

After a shaky start against Tomljanovic in the first round and an emotional match against Vekic in her previous outing, Gauff appeared far more composed on Arthur Ashe Stadium this Saturday morning. While the atmosphere is typically more electric during night sessions, the quieter morning setting may have benefited the American, who started the match with an early break (3-0).

Although she saw her lead vanish three games later, Gauff gradually found her rhythm against an opponent who struggled with accuracy (29 unforced errors to 8 winners). Unshaken, this season’s Roland-Garros champion went on to win nine of the next ten games starting from 3-3 in the first set.

A 1-hour, 13-minute victory that reassures Gauff about her form after two unconvincing opening matches. In the round of 16, she will face a tough challenge against either Daria Kasatkina or Naomi Osaka.
