Can Alcaraz dethrone Sinner as world number one?
After his title in Cincinnati, Carlos Alcaraz now has 9,590 points in the ATP rankings, which is 1,890 points less than his main rival on the tour: Jannik Sinner (11,480).
However, this situation could reverse within two weeks and by the end of the final Grand Slam of the year (US Open, August 24–September 7).
Indeed, the Italian must defend the 2,000 points he earned last year thanks to his title in New York, while the Spaniard will only have 50 (defeat in the second round against Van de Zandschulp).
Consequently, if one of the two players reaches the third round, whoever goes further than the other will be world number one at the end of the US Open. If both were to lose in the same round, then the native of El Palmar will reclaim the number one position in the ATP rankings.
It is worth noting that this prestigious position could be decided in the final, as the two men can only meet at that stage of the competition.
