After defeating Moutet in the previous round, Harold Mayot secured his first Masters 1000 victory. Having qualified for the second round, he faced Cerundolo in another Franco-Argentinian showdown.
Despite a strong effort, the 23-year-old player fell in 1 hour and 28 minutes of play, exiting the Spanish tournament. Coming through the qualifiers, the junior Australian Open champion had previously eliminated Shevchenko and Boyer to reach the main draw of the Masters 1000.
Meanwhile, Cerundolo received a first-round bye. He now advances to face his compatriot Comesana for a spot in the round of 16. The ATP world No. 21 is in good form, having recently reached the semifinals in Munich.
