Nishikori: I Really Enjoyed Facing the Big 3, but the Next Generation Is Incredible

Kei Nishikori has faced numerous physical setbacks throughout his career. After his victory against Aleksandar Vukic in Madrid, the Japanese player shared his goals and how he manages pain.

"I feel like I’m getting back to my best level. It took time, but physically, I’m in perfect shape, and I’m looking forward to the coming months.

I’ve gotten used to the pain, to having to fight twice as hard as usual to compete, but it makes me appreciate this journey even more. The key is to stay positive and patient.

My main goal is to be consistently competitive. If that happens, I think I can win another tournament and return to the top 50.

The shots are more powerful now. I really enjoyed facing the Big 3, but the next generation is also incredible."

Nishikori will face Denis Shapovalov in the second round.
