David Ferrer to Step Down as Barcelona Tournament Director
This Saturday, the focus is on the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Barcelona. Karen Khachanov, Holger Rune, Carlos Alcaraz, and Arthur Fils are the last four players still in contention in Catalonia, all vying to reach the final in the coming hours. However, even before the tournament concludes, the 2026 edition is already set for a major change.
Indeed, David Ferrer, a former professional player who retired in 2019, announced in recent hours that he will no longer serve as the Barcelona tournament director next year. Appointed to the role six years ago, the former world No. 3 and Roland-Garros finalist has made his decision official.
"I am very grateful to the organization for giving me this opportunity. After my playing career, I felt very fulfilled on both a personal and professional level.
"I learned how the tennis industry works, I experienced the tournament’s greatness, and the dedication with which they work every year to move things forward—it has been a very rewarding job.
"A chapter closes for me, and a new one begins. I wanted to take on new challenges, but this is something I will always carry in my heart, something I will never forget.
"I am very satisfied with what I’ve done, and I take great friendships with me. I leave very happy," explained Ferrer, who remains the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team.
