Davidovich Fokina Defeats Mensik and Records His 20th Hard-Court Win This Season
Davidovich Fokina faced this year's Miami champion, Mensik. Without faltering, the Spaniard dominated his opponent in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to advance to the round of 16 in Toronto.
Highly efficient (4/4 break points converted) and dominant on return (50% of return points won), he extended his lead in head-to-head matchups against the Czech player (4-1). This was their third meeting this year after the Australian Open and Eastbourne, both won by the ATP's 19th-ranked player.
With this victory, the player secured his 20th hard-court win this season. Next up: the winner of the match between Rublev and Sonego.
Davidovich Fokina has already surpassed his performance from last year in Canada, where he was eliminated in the third round by Arnaldi. A runner-up in Washington, he is still chasing his first ATP title, remaining the only player in the top 20 yet to claim a trophy.
