Davis Cup 2025: Germany Defeats Japan, Secures Spot in Final 8

In a thoroughly dominant performance, Germany overpowered Japan and secured their qualification for the final phase of the 2025 Davis Cup.
We now know the second qualifier for the Davis Cup 2025 Final 8. Alongside Italy, the host nation for the finals in Bologna this November, Germany became the first team to earn their spot on the court in this second round of qualifiers.
In Tokyo, facing Japan, the team led by Michael Kohlmann was ruthless, clinching a clear 3-0 victory after the doubles match, even before the final two singles matches were played.
On Friday, Jan-Lennard Struff secured the first point with a hard-fought win over Yoshihito Nishioka (6-4, 6-7, 6-4), before Yannick Hanfmann gave the German nation a comfortable lead by defeating Shintaro Mochizuki (6-3, 6-3).
It was through the doubles that Germany, last year’s semifinalist, sealed their victory. The pair Kevin Krawietz/Tim Puetz prevailed over Yosuke Watanuki and Takeru Yuzuki (6-3, 7-6).
Germany had never managed to defeat Japan in the past. The two nations had only faced each other once before in the Davis Cup, back in 1933. The Asian nation had won convincingly at the time (4 wins to 1).
Now guaranteed a place in the Final 8, Germany will aim to win the competition, which they have claimed three times but have not won since 1993.
