Davis Cup 2025: United States Eliminated at Home, Argentina and Austria Secure Final 8 Spots
Following the qualifications of Germany and France, who joined Italy in Bologna for the 2025 Davis Cup Finals, three more nations have also secured their spots in recent hours.
First, the Czech Republic. In Delray Beach, with the score tied 1-1 after the first day against the United States, captain Tomas Berdych's team qualified after the decisive fifth match.
After the American pair Austin Krajicek/Rajeev Ram defeated Tomas Machac/Jakub Mensik (7-6, 5-7, 6-4), Taylor Fritz had the chance to send his country to the Final 8 but was stopped by Jiri Lehecka, who had already defeated Frances Tiafoe in straight sets the day before (6-4, 3-6, 6-4).
Finally, Mensik dominated a confidence-lacking Tiafoe (6-1, 6-4) to send the Czech Republic to Bologna.
Argentina also pulled off a major upset in Groningen against the defending finalists, the Netherlands. After winning the first two singles matches, the South American nation confirmed their dominance on the second day.
The doubles team of Andrés Molteni and Horacio Zeballos prevailed over Sander Arends and Botic van de Zandschulp (6-3, 7-5), securing Argentina's spot in the Final 8 with the third match.
Finally, Austria had a scare but will also be at the Finals in November. After leading 2-0, captain Jürgen Melzer's team saw Hungary level the score at 2-2, thanks to the doubles pair Fabian Marozsan/Zsombor Piros, who defeated Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler (7-6, 7-6), and then the same Zsombor Piros, who dominated Lukas Neumayer (7-5, 7-6).
But Jurij Rodionov, who had already defeated Marozsan in singles, completed the double, defeating Marton Fucsovics (6-2, 6-1). Austria thus secures its first qualification for the Davis Cup Final 8 since the competition's reform in 2019.
Out of the first five matches of the weekend, no home team qualified. Only Australia and Spain can still reverse the trend, although both countries were trailing 0-2, against Belgium and Denmark respectively, after Saturday's matches.
