Davis Cup: We really have a team that can win the title, Mathieu displays his ambitions for the finals

Mission accomplished for the French team, which has qualified for the Final 8 of the 2025 Davis Cup, thanks to outstanding performances by Moutet and Rinderknech in singles. Captain Paul-Henri Mathieu expresses his pride and determination to go all the way.

France has secured its ticket to the Final 8 of the 2025 Davis Cup. After its success against Brazil in February during the first round of qualifications, the French team confirmed this weekend in Osijek, on Croatian clay.

Thanks to a very strong Corentin Moutet who dominated Dino Prizmic and then Marin Cilic, and also thanks to Arthur Rinderknech who had put the Blues ahead 2-0 after Friday’s matches, France will fight to try to win the competition in Bologna in November. Captain Paul-Henri Mathieu reacted to his team’s qualification.

"I’m happy for the group, first of all, that we could qualify for this final phase. These players deserve it. I’m also thinking of those who aren’t here. But those who played here really did the job. They were good all week, on and off the court.

I said it before the match, the goal was to qualify for the final phase. It was tough. We expected it to be a difficult away match, on a surface that wasn’t necessarily to our advantage.

It’s always complex. It had all the makings of a trap, a bit, an away match on clay, outdoors, at a time in the season when we don’t really play on clay, facing a Croatian crowd that we thought might be a bit fiery. And in the end, it’s a logical victory," assured Mathieu, who is now looking ahead to the final phase, for L’Équipe.

"We had two new singles players compared to Orleans (against Brazil). That’s the charm of a captain’s job. I think we really have a team that can win the title.

We’re going to Bologna to win. Many players can contribute to that victory, as we’ve seen. We have a lot of players who are passionate about the Davis Cup. That’s a plus. The goal is clearly to go all the way," he concluded for the FFT media.
