Davis Cup - Berrettini's revenge
Matteo Berrettini has taken revenge on his own destiny. The Italian colossus, who was absent from Italy's Davis Cup triumph last year for the first time in 47 years, had a hard time coming to terms with the fact that he had so dreamed of winning the trophy for his nation.
Far from admitting defeat, the current world number 35 battled with his body throughout the season, even winning three ATP titles before finally standing alongside Jannik Sinner, one of the two great architects of this year's Italian consecration.
An emotional moment for a player so beloved, so impressive, but also so fragile. It's all the more poignant when we recall Sinner's own words at the Davis Cup 2023 trophy presentation, where Berrettini was only there as a supporter. Addressing his compatriot and friend, he had declared: "We'll win together next year."
It's now a done deal!
