Davis Cup: Cobolli saves seven match points against Bergs and sends Italy to the final
For the third year in a row, Italy will be in the Davis Cup final.
Facing surprising Belgium in the semifinal, the Italians had ideally started their semifinal thanks to Matteo Berrettini's win over Raphaël Collignon (6-3, 6-4).
The second singles match of the day pitted Flavio Cobolli against Zizou Bergs. Thrust into the role of Italian number one in the absence of Sinner and Musetti, Cobolli had easily taken control in the first set 6-3.
But Bergs, ever the fighter, did not let it happen and managed to snatch the second set in a tie-break. The match then entered a whole new dimension.
The two men, solid on their serves, offered a real thriller to the Bologna crowd. Bergs first saved two match points on his serve at 5-4, before taking the match into a high-pressure tie-break.
In a completely crazy decisive game — 32 points played — Cobolli eventually prevailed 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 after saving seven match points. With a final winning serve, the world number 22 sealed Italy's qualification for the final, where the team will attempt to secure a third consecutive title on Sunday.
