Davis Cup: Mensik dominates Carreño Busta, Czech Republic moves closer to semi-finals
The last two quarter-finals of the 2025 Davis Cup are taking place this Thursday. After Belgium and Italy qualified, the third spot is being contested between Spain and the Czech Republic. David Ferrer's team will try to qualify for the semi-finals despite the absence of Carlos Alcaraz, who is injured in his right thigh.
To try to overcome a solid Czech team, Ferrer trusted Pablo Carreño Busta, who faced Jakub Mensik in the first singles match of the day. The two men had only faced each other once before, at the beginning of the season in Auckland. Mensik had won in three sets.
The match was tight, but in both sets, it was the world number 19, winner of the Miami Masters 1000 earlier this year, who was the strongest (20 aces, 43 winners). He won in two hard-fought sets (7-5, 6-4) against the ATP number 89. He puts his team on the path to qualification, and the Czechs will be in the semi-finals if Jiri Lehecka beats Jaume Munar in the second singles match.
