Diallo Upsets Dimitrov and Advances to His First Masters 1000 Quarterfinal

A lucky loser in Madrid, Gabriel Diallo continues to live out a dream in the Spanish capital. The Canadian, after victories against Bergs, Majchrzak, and Norrie, faced Grigor Dimitrov tonight in the round of 16.
Diallo found himself on the brink of defeat after losing the first set and trailing 6-4 in the second-set tiebreak. Dimitrov earned three match points but failed to convert them, watching his opponent level the match at one set apiece. Fueled by this turnaround, the world No. 78 secured an early break in the third set and never faltered on his serves from there.
After 2 hours and 22 minutes of play and a final winning serve, he clinched his spot in the tournament’s quarterfinals with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 victory. This marks his very first Masters 1000 quarterfinal. He now awaits the winner of the match between Alex De Minaur and Lorenzo Musetti.
