Dimitrov Joins the Wave of Withdrawals for Geneva Tournament
The ATP 250 tournament in Geneva will welcome Novak Djokovic, but the number of withdrawals for the Swiss event, which begins next week, continues to grow each day. The latest player to pull out is Grigor Dimitrov.
The Bulgarian, ranked 15th in the world, has not had a very prolific year so far, having already retired from three matches since the start of the season. Defeated in his opening match at the Rome Masters 1000 by Francesco Passaro (7-5, 6-3), Dimitrov has chosen to skip the Swiss tournament to ensure he is in peak condition for Roland-Garros.
A quarterfinalist at the French Open last year, the 33-year-old has struggled to kickstart his season due to a hip injury that flared up during the Australian Open, forcing him to retire in the first round (also against Passaro). With this withdrawal, Learner Tien takes advantage and secures a spot in the main draw.
In recent days, several other players have also decided to withdraw from the Geneva tournament, including Jordan Thompson, Roberto Bautista-Agut, Lorenzo Sonego, Camilo Ugo Carabelli, and Denis Shapovalov. As a reminder, Fritz, Djokovic, Ruud, and Khachanov are expected to compete in Geneva in the coming days.
